Looking Forward: Final North American Pro League Predictions

North America

The Abjured

Current Standing: 1st
Current Record: 4-0
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: No

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Spoookie (3-1) W for Abjured
1/18 Apex Prime (2-2) W for Abjured
1/25 Never Lucky (1-3) W for Abjured

Final Standing: 8-0

Overview:

While it’s quite likely that The Abjured have locked up their number one spot, they still have three tough opponents ahead of them. Spoookie, Apex Prime, and Never Lucky will all come at them in full force and look to spoil their undefeated season and shatter their invincible image. All three of these sets should be exciting to say the least.

Spoookie

Current Standing: 2nd
Current Record: 3-1
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 The Abjured (4-0) L for Spoookie
1/18 Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy (2-2) W for Spoookie
1/25 Zero Counterplay (0-4) W for Spoookie

Final Standing: 5-2

Overview:

Spoookie’s season has been a successful one despite any roster changes before and during the four weeks we have seen thus far. With only one of the top two contenders in their path, Spoookie is looking to ride the rest of the season out on a high note. A victory over The Abjured would create for some crazy final weeks, but I don’t see it happening with how long The Abjured has to prepare against them specifically in their first week back. Lastly, they do hold the tie-breaker over Apex Prime with a victory earlier this season.

Apex Prime

Current Standing: Tied for 3rd
Current Record: 2-2
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy (2-2) W for Apex Prime
1/18 The Abjured (4-0) L for Apex Prime
1/25 Final Form (2-2) W for Apex Prime

Final Standing: 4-3

Overview:

With the replacement of Ostrich Eggs for Hman, Apex Prime still has a shot at a top two spot. I am not under the belief that Ostrich Eggs being replaced is the reason they’ll place this high, but rather a number of things.

I believe with the several week break this team will come out strong. With a few small changes to the revenant and mesmer, we know that those were never the key classes of Apex Prime. Although the meta may not change drastically, this alteration helps them and could be a key factor in them hoping to place in the top two. This can only be accomplished by winning out or hoping Spoookie drops two sets and Team PZ drops one.

Team PZ

Current Standing: Tied for 3rd
Current Record: 2-2
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Final Form (2-2) W for Team PZ
1/18 Zero Counterplay (0-4) W for Team PZ
1/25 Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy (2-2) W for Team PZ

Final Standing: 5-2

Overview:

Team PZ, who holds the tie-breaker over Spoookie, needs to finish out this season with wins if they want any contention for a final two spot. Thankfully for them, two of their three matchups are against two of the weaker teams in the league. Final Form will prove to be a tough matchup, but they are a struggling team who is vulnerable right now.

Final Form

Current Standing: Tied for 3rd
Current Record: 2-2
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Team PZ (2-2) L for Final Form
1/18 Never Lucky (1-3) W for Final Form
1/25 Apex Prime (2-2) L for Final Form

Final Standing: 3-4

Overview:

Final Form looked like a promising team coming into the season, but may have some kinks to work out between now and season two. With many of their players on unfamiliar classes, certainly not their mains, they are not at their strongest. While I doubt they will face relegation, they still have three tough matchups ahead of them that will need to handled with care if they don’t want to see the bottom three of the standings.

Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy

Current Standing: Tied for 3rd
Current Record: 2-2
Top Two Contention: Yes
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Apex Prime (2-2) L for Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy
1/18 Spoookie (2-2) L for Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy
1/25 Team PZ (2-2) L for Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy

Final Standing: 2-5

Overview:

Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy is about to face three of the top teams over the next three weeks. With that in mind, things won’t be getting any easier for them in the coming weeks and I feel they will struggle to say the least. While they are currently sitting with a 2-2 record, some of their easier matchups are far behind them.

Never Lucky

Current Standing: 7th
Current Record: 1-3
Top Two Contention: No
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Zero Counterplay (0-4) W for Never Lucky
1/18 Team PZ (2-2) L for Never Lucky
1/25  The Abjured (4-0) L for Never Lucky

Final Standing: 2-5

Overview:

Never Lucky is one of the most underrated teams in the league. With a slow start to the season, things seem to be revving up for them, however, I fear its too late to make a push for a spot in the upper half of the standings. Aside from a matchup with Zero Counterplay, facing Team PZ and The Abjured will be rough. A potential upset from this team could occur but with several players still attempting to get in the groove of the higher-end PvP, I don’t foresee this happening until season two.

Zero Counterplay

Current Standing: 8th
Current Record: 0-4
Top Two Contention: No
Possibility of Relegation: Yes

Upcoming Matches:

Date Opponent Storm’s Prediction
1/11 Never Lucky (1-3) L for Zero Counterplay
1/18 Team PZ (2-2) L for Zero Counterplay
1/25 Spoookie (2-2) L for Zero Counterplay

Final Standing: 0-7

Overview:

What a rough season for Zero Counterplay. Through heartbreaking losses and much more, this season isn’t what they were expecting. Still, there is hope for them with a matchup against Never Lucky, as they may be able to pull out a victory. With all of this in mind, what is next for them?

Storm’s Updated North American End of the Season Predictions:

Standings Team Current Standings
1st The Abjured 1st
2nd Team PZ T-3rd
3rd Spoookie 2nd
4th Apex Prime T-3rd
5th Final Form T-3rd
 6th Never Lucky 7th
7th Ez Pz Lemon Squeezy T-3rd
 8th Zero Counterplay 8th

The Takeaway

The thing I would like to bring to attention is the three-way tie for second place that could potentially occur. Apex Prime can only make the top two by hoping they, along with Spoookie and Team PZ, finish 4-3 or 5-2. If Apex Prime ties with only Spoookie, who has the head-to-head matchup, Spoookie will move to the top two. If Apex Prime ties with Team PZ alone, Apex Prime will take the top two. Finally, if Team PZ ties with only Spoookie, Team PZ will take that place for themselves.

With Spoookie winning over Apex Prime, Apex Prime winning over Team PZ, and Team PZ winning over Spoookie, no clear second place can be established if all three were to tie, thus some sort of tie-breaker will happen with all three teams.

It’s not quite clear what the tie-breaker for this second place spot will entail but there are few different scenarios:

  • Overall point accumulation; winner: unclear
  • Three-way bracket play; winner: unclear
  • Overall match win/loss ratio; winner (if all future sets are 2-0): Spoookie

The rules aren’t strictly speaking ‘clear’ when it comes to tie-breaker scenarios at the season’s end, however, all three could favor a different team. It would make the most sense to format some sort of three-way bracket for these teams to settle it fairly, but no word on this has come as of yet.
